HAPPY CANADA DAY 2023!

For the first time in four (4) years, it appears as though we are about to celebrate a “normal” Canada Day weekend.  Large crowds will congregate without the need for masks or social distancing on LeBreton Flats in Ottawa and in public spaces across the nation to celebrate Canada’s 156th birthday.  Families, friends and colleagues will congregate in backyards, cottages and campgrounds for barbecues and pool parties and the Maple Leaf will adorn front porches from St. John’s to Victoria.

Today is the day we demonstrate our gratitude for the privilege of calling this free, peaceful and beautiful patch of land our home.  We are blessed to live in a culturally diverse and inclusive country where our differences are not only celebrated, but they are also embraced by all.  Here people are encouraged to recognize their heritage and still call themselves Canadian.

At the same time, Canada Day is an occasion to reflect on some of the dark aspects of our history.  The discovery of more than 2,000 unmarked graves in former residential school locations since 2021 and the growing list of Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women and Girls are examples of the atrocities that have been committed against Indigenous Peoples.

Racism and discrimination against various cultural communities remains horrifically prevalent in every province and territory.  In recent months, members of Canada’s LGBTQIA2+ communities have been the target of amplified levels of hatred, intimidation, and violence.  Clearly much work is required to redress this nation’s wrongdoings and it’s vital for us to come together if we hope to resolve and eradicate these issues permanently.

Meanwhile, please remember to express your gratitude to those tremendous people in our armed forces, law enforcement agencies, healthcare and frontline workforce for protecting our liberties and helping us thrive.  On behalf of People First Fundraising Solutions, I want to wish everyone a safe and enjoyable Canada Day!

Stay well,

Mike
