Well, it’s that time of year again. Summer vacation literally starts with a bang as firework extravaganzas brighten the skies over cities, villages, theme parks and neighbourhoods from St. John’s to Victoria. Backyard barbecues, pool parties, rounds of golf, beach trips and campfires will be in high gear this first long weekend as our nation celebrates its 157th birthday.
Amidst the flag waving and overt expressions of patriotism, it’s important to remind ourselves that Canada is far from perfect. Tensions between French and English Canada have persisted longer than our country has existed. The pain and atrocities that we’ve inflicted on Indigenous communities are reprehensible and unforgivable. Yet reconciliation has been inexcusably slow. During the pandemic, the weaknesses and inadequacies of our health care system were on full display.
While we revel in all the wonderful things about our nation, let’s be sure to reflect on the importance of working together to solve these challenges. I still think Canada is the greatest country on Earth. We should use that notion as a rallying point to band together and address the critical issues that prevent us from reaching even greater heights.
Happy Canada Day!
